THE DETAILS ...

BBQ fundraiser for 150th anniversary, Sept. 1 at Town Hall, Southampton

Southampton, Ont., Sept. 1, 2007 -- The 150th Anniversary committee plans another fundraiser at Town Hall in Southampton on Saturday, Sept. 1, the first day on the souvenir 16-month calendar.

Chef Lorne Shantz and his volunteers will be serving up the burgers and hot dogs from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, Aug. 4 in front of the Town Hall in Southampton. Lorne says, "Help us raise money for all the big events in 2008."

Receipts from the fundraising BBQ will go toward the many events of 150th Anniversary Weekend, Aug. 14-17, 2008. The BBQ on Aug. 4 was a great success and the committee hopes for as much success on the first of September.

Look for the 150th "Coin Catcher", a huge double-sided tape, sticky enough to trap any coins and bills. It all goes to support the 2008 celebrations.

The 150th anniversary souvenir calendar starts today, Sept. 1, 2007. Katherine Leonard will be selling the Southampton, Then and Now calendars at the BBQ. Southampton was incorporated as a village on July 24, 1858, and the 16-month calendar (September 2007 to December 2008) recounts 150 years of town history using old and new photographs to contrast how the town used to look with how it looks today. A different subject is featured each month, such as the famous Southampton sunsets, the shipwreck on the beach, the boardwalk, the train station, the Long Dock, Chantry Island lighthouse, and ten other subjects, with historical captions for each.
