JAMAICA
International adoptions remain open in Jamaica. In 2005 22 children were adopted from Jamaica to Canada. Probably most of them were related to the Canadian parents, although the statistics from Citizenship and Immigration Canada do not differentiate between relative and non-relative adoptions. Adoptions in previous years were higher: 23 in 2004, and 43 in 2003. U.S. statistics show that the number of immigrant visas for orphans from Jamaica is increasing: 36 in 2003, 51 in 2004, and 63 in 2005. The Child Development Agency (CDA), in Kingston, identifies children for adoption and accepts adoption applications. CDA is the only agency legally authorized to provide adoption services in Jamaica.
