Ontario opens its adoption files; original records available
Family Helper, Sept. 10, 2007
The hunt for hidden adoption information starts Sept. 17, 2007, when the Adoption Information Disclosure Act comes into force in Ontario. As of Sept. 17, adult adoptees and birth parents, whose adoptions were finalized in Ontario, can apply to get information in adoption orders and original birth records.

The opening of Ontario adoption records means that adoptees over 18 can access previously sealed records, and discover their original name. Birth parents can learn the current name of a child they placed for adoption, but only if the child is now an adult (over 18). [See more at www.familyhelper.net/news/070910open.html.]

Search British phone books back to 1880
VNUnet.com and Associated Press, Sept. 20, 2006
British Telecom and genealogy web site Ancestry.co.uk have launched an online collection of British phone books dating from 1880 to 1984 and containing over 250 million names. Members of Ancestry.co.uk can search the phone books using name, year and county.

First to go online will be 430 books for greater London, with over 72 million names and numbers, such as Bram Stoker (Victoria 1436), Buckingham Palace (Victoria 6913) and Laurence Olivier (Kensington 6505). "Since their introduction in 1880, phone books have provided a unique snapshot of communities in Britain in a regular and familiar format, making them an ideal source for family and social historians," said David Hay, head of heritage at BT Archives.
