Gay adoption

More and more same-sex couples are choosing to start a family. Gay men can now adopt openly as a couple, engage a surrogate or arrange with a woman to have a child and share the parenting. Lesbian couples can choose from adoption and donor insemination.

Statistics Canada reported in the 2001 census that there were 2,900 same-sex couples with at least one child. This doesn't include single or non-custodial gay parents or those unwilling to declare they're a same-sex couple.

Gay and lesbian couples are proving that a child can be raised successfully in something other than the traditional man-woman household. Studies show that the children of homosexual parents are as well-adjusted as those of heterosexual parents. Nonetheless, homosexual parents and their children still face prejudice from those parts of society which don't accept the notion of two moms or two dads.
